No Penalties for Breastfeeding

My son, Liam, was born in
August 2003, and eight weeks later I resumed playing recreational women's
ice hockey. He has been a frequent attendee at my games this year, although
my partner frequently has to take him out of the stands because the
cheering of the other spectators startles and upsets him.
My league was wrapping up
its season, and the championship game was held on March 28, when Liam
was seven months old, and still an avid breastfeeder. Because it was
the final game, we had an unusually large number of friends and family
come to cheer us on, and the game was exciting and close, but my team
prevailed with a final score of two to one.
All of the excitement, yelling,
and shouting got to be a little bit much for Liam, and he began to cry
inconsolably. Immediately following the game, my mother brought my weeping
son to the dressing room for some comfort. I was still in my equipment,
but Liam was in no mood to be patient, so I quickly pulled off my helmet,
jersey, elbow pads, and shoulder pads, and nursed him while wearing
the rest of my equipment!
Surely, if a mother can breastfeed
in a hockey dressing room, mothers can breastfeed anywhere!
