My name is Mónica Maria Cardona. I have three children: Valentina, 10, Manuela, eight, and Luis
Guillermo, 21 months old. For my family and me, breastfeeding has been a gift from God, a marvelous
experience that has enriched our lives and the lives of everyone around us.
I found my La Leche League Group accidentally when I was pregnant with my first daughter. At my last
prenatal visit, I was told that an LLL meeting was about to start. I attended and found a lot of useful
information.
Nine years later, when I was pregnant with my third child, I was invited to attend a different Group.
I went because I remembered that the first meeting had been nice. My own two breastfeeding experiences had
been perfect (in my opinion) and those days had been some of the best times of my life. At the end of the
meeting, the Leader told me that I fit the prerequisites to be a La Leche League Leader. Me? I began
preparation and my life changed. I have learned a great deal of things and the work is so rewarding.
When we were visiting my cousin, who had just had a baby, the nurse entered the hospital room and said
she had to give the baby a little bit of water in a bottle. My 10-year-old became upset and started to
explain all the reasons why newborn babies need only human milk. The nurse asked, "How do you know
this?" My daughter proudly said with a smile, "My mother is a La Leche League Leader."
I am very proud to be an LLL Leader and to help serve and support all the mothers who need us. I feel
very useful and know that my work is very important—it can mean the difference between life and death for a baby.
It’s amazing to me that I’m now leading the Group I found accidentally and that the organization has grown to mean so much to me.
