My first daughter was born
five years ago. I had always planned on breastfeeding but never expected
the problems I encountered. I quit trying after three days of crying
through every attempt at nursing. I didn't know anyone else who had
so much trouble with breastfeeding and assumed I just couldn't do it.
A few years later, I met
a woman, an LLL leader, who became my friend. When I became pregnant
again and asked how to prepare myself for breastfeeding she said, "Read,
read, read!" I suppose I was expecting verbal advice about preparing
my breasts, so I was a bit discouraged by her response. Nevertheless,
I borrowed a copy of the WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING and a stack of
back issues of NEW BEGINNINGS and I read, read, read. I'm thankful I
did. With each chapter of the book and each article in the magazines,
I became more and more determined to breastfeed and more confident that
I could.
It seemed like a slow process
for us, but I found encouragement from the many articles and letters
I'd read in your magazine about women overcoming difficulties. I knew
if I kept trying, we'd get it right. Suddenly, one day, I brought my
daughter to my breast and it didn't hurt me! I nearly cried with relief!
I was so happy, and my daughter was so contented. She is only three
months old now, and I am looking forward to a long and happy breastfeeding
relationship with her. I wanted to say "thank you" to NEW BEGINNINGS
for the stories that helped me to persevere.
