Amid baby noises and the
clinking of silverware and clatter of dishes, the US Surgeon General,
David Satcher, addressed the luncheon crowd at the La Leche League International
Conference on Tuesday, July 12.
Dr. Satcher told the audience
that his position sometimes makes people a little nervous. He mentioned
a hotel worker, who, when finding out who the uniformed Satcher was,
quickly said, "I quit smoking years ago."
Since his appointment, Dr.
Satcher initiated the US Health and Human Services' Blueprint for Action
on Breastfeeding, a comprehensive outline of public health strategies
to increase brmtfeeding rates. A goal of his is to eliminate the disparities
of health care in the United States, and to improve the quality of life
on our planet. Dr Satcher's speech, which outlined many of the advantages
of breastfeeding, showed he understands the health benefits of breastfeeding.
He said he wants to work on convincing businesses to make it easier
for mothers to nurse in the workplace by having onsite child care, where
breastfeeding is encouraged. Dr. Satcher closed his talk by urging La
Leche League to continue to do its "outstanding work."
