Media Release: La Leche
League International Publishes New Pamphlet on Breastfeeding in Public
Schaumburg, IL (February 2006): La Leche League International (LLLI)
has recently published a pamphlet on Breastfeeding in Public. Surveys
have shown that some women are uncomfortable at the thought of nursing
their baby in public and that this uneasiness sometimes interferes
with the breastfeeding relationship.
The pamphlet, funded in part by the Breastfeeding Protection Initiative,
addresses cultural attitudes and helps mothers examine their level
of comfort for breastfeeding in public. The guide provides practical
hints on the best places to nurse a baby while out and about, and describes
attire most suited to breastfeeding in public. Should it arise, methods
for handling criticism from family members and passersby are also addressed.
Many breastfeeding mothers have found that, with a little preparation
and planning, it’s easy to bring baby along where ever they go.
Once a woman is comfortable and has mastered the art of nursing in
public, she may be surprised by how few people realize she’s
breastfeeding. The more a woman breastfeeds her baby in the presence
of others, the less she may find herself worrying about the thoughts
of people around her.
LLLI is a nonprofit organization founded almost 50 years ago by seven
women who wanted to help other mothers learn about breastfeeding. Today
LLLI is an internationally recognized authority on breastfeeding, with
a mother-to-mother network that includes La Leche League Leaders and
Groups in countries all over the world. A Professional Advisory Board
reviews information.
Mothers who contact LLL find answers to their questions on breastfeeding
and support from other parents who are committed to being sensitive
and responsive to the needs of their babies. Local LLL Groups meet
monthly to discuss breastfeeding and related issues. La Leche League
Leaders are also available by telephone to offer information and encouragement
when women have questions about breastfeeding.
The organization distributes more than three million publications each
year, including the classic how-to book, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding,
now in its seventh edition. Look for it in bookstores, or order from
La Leche League International by calling 800-LALECHE weekdays between
9 AM and 5 PM Central Time. To order online, to find a La Leche League
Group in your area, or for information on breastfeeding, visit the
