The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) was established as a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council in 1946 to prepare recommendations and reports to the Council on promoting women's rights in political, economic, civil, social and educational fields.

The 46th Session of the CSW took place on March 4-15, 2002 at the United Nations Headquarters, New York City, New York, USA. LLLI was represented by the following LLL Leaders/LLLI Representatives to the UN: Kate Sharp, Judy LeVan Fram, and Jo Ann Gerling.

At the 46th session the Commission considered the following two thematic issues:

  1. Eradicating poverty, including through the empowerment of women throughout their life cycle in a globalizing world; and
  2. Environmental management and mitigation of natural disasters: a gender perspective.

A statement which addressed the two thematic issues was written and signed by LLLI, ILCA, NABA and WABA.
