HIV
and Breastfeeding Colloquium and the WABA Global Forum 2
Sept. 20-21 and Sept. 23-27; Arusha, Tanzania
Rebecca
Magalhães, representing La Leche League International (LLLI)
and as Co-Coordinator of the WABA Mother Support Task Force, attended
the HIV & Breastfeeding Colloquium and the Global Forum 2,
that took place in Arusha Tanzania, respectively from Sept. 20-21
and Sept. 23-27. Magalhães also attended the Global Breastfeeding
Partners Meeting (GBPM), on Sept. 28. Natalia Smith, representing
LLLI and assisting Magalhães in the Global Initiative for
Mother Support (GIMS) activities at the Forum, attended the Global
Forum 2. The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) hosted
the two events in collaboration and with funding from international
and national agencies. Magalhães was a participant in the
Colloquium and facilitated and coordinated the GIMS activities
during the Forum, specifically four GIMS workshops, a GIMS skit,
a GIMS presentation and a public fill-in chart on negative/positive
comments for mother support. Smith participated actively in the
Forum, attending workshops and assisting Magalhães in the
implementation of the GIMS activities. AnotherLook materials and
LLLI materials (primarily International Conference information)
were made available to Colloquium and Forum attendees. In addition
to networking, Magalhães attended a preliminary meeting
called by the promoters of the Global Initiative for Father Support,
prior to the Men's forum and open meeting and was on the alert
for persons who could be candidates for speakers in the Global
Sessions at the 2003 International Conference.
