Donor-Specific Tidbits

Donor Bill of Rights

The Funding Development Department, and LLLI as an organization, wants to be sure its donors know they are valued and respected. The trust of our donors is essential to a harmonious partnership that aims to further the LLLI mission.

Please take some time to read this document, developed by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). La Leche League International is committed to the very highest standards in the ethics of fundraising and subscribes to these principles. Bring on the empowerment here...

Donor Reception

Whether renewing past friendships or meeting for the first time, the 2007 LLLI Conference was a time that donors, LLLI Founders, staff, and the Board of Directors had time to meet face-to-face and celebrate the mission we all support, and a wonderful celebration it was!

Donor Survey

Your opinions are important to us and for that reason we are in the process of developing a Donor Survey. Your invaluable input will help us assess our ability to serve the LLLI mission and to meet your expectations as donors. We will keep you posted on the status of this survey in the coming months. The Donor Survey is essential to Funding Development’s strategic plan for sustainable LLLI funding and for meeting your needs as a donor.

LLLI Wishes Granted

Due to a gift in honor of Janice Riordan and in memory of Dr. Hugh Riordan, both long time members of the La Leche League International Health Advisory Council, from private and family donors, the LLLI headquarters staff received have the computer hardware they need to enable them to further the mission and provide improved services.

LLLI Wish List

To be updated soon...

If you can help the office with any of the items on this wish list, please contact the Funding Development Department at fdassociate@llli.org or call (847) 519-7730, ext. 240.

Supporting the Mission

Mission Focused - Combined Federal Campaign

For several years, LLLI has received thousands of dollars in pledges from U.S. federal government employees participating in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). The number for La Leche League International is 10495. Please tell your friends, family, and colleagues about our participation so that we can raise even more pledges this year to help support mothers who are making the healthy choice to breastfeed their babies.

So many accredited volunteers are doing incredible work in the field, and when LLLI is part of the Combined Federal Campaign, we get to showcase some of this work. Here are a few of the many things Leaders are doing in the field:

  • In British Columbia, Canada, Leaders have conducted workshops for immigrants to Canada who needed breastfeeding support.
  • In Denver, Colorado, USA, Leaders have been presenting relevant topics for teen mothers in an after school parenting group since January 2005.
  • In Frederick, MD, USA, mothers, fathers, and grandparents come to meetings addressing family issues that pertain to breastfeeding.

Companies That Give More to Charity Are More Profitable, Study Finds

Companies that nurture a culture of philanthropy are more profitable, says research produced by Dover Management, a company that operates a mutual fund that invests in corporations committed to charitable giving. Dover found that companies with a solid link between giving and operating earnings outperformed the Standard & Poor’s 500 index by 3.5 percentage points over five years. The data support results of a similar study produced a year ago by university researchers by B.Lev, C. Petrovits, and S. Radhakrishnan.

Technology at La Leche League

Why Electronic Is Good for LLLI - Kintera Update

Kintera, our online database (initial costs covered by a very generous three-year donation), has upgraded its features, allowing LLLI to better track statistics, communicate with donors, and maintain more accurate records. Aside from being one of the major communication channels in today's society, email enables LLLI to connect with supporters in new ways.
If we have your email address in Kintera you receive immediate, automated email acknowledgments for your gifts, and these serve as receipts for income tax purposes. Please check your Spam setting and folder to be sure that you are receiving LLLI emails, which come to you from any email address ending in "@llli.org."

Although e-communications will never replace the personal communications that we feel are an important part of saying "Thank You" to our major donors, having the capability to send appeals and newsletters via email means a large savings on printing and postage. We believe that you want your donations to go toward furthering the LLLI mission, and we thank you for understanding our need to reduce fundraising costs.

New Computers Help Process Memberships!

Due to a generous private donation, the LLLI office has been able to replace and upgrade computers. Already staff is seeing the difference in their productivity, with increased speed in processing. Gifts like this enable the staff to fully utilize the capabilities of Kintera as well as improve their ability to serve you better. Susan of the Education and Member Services Department says, "The flat screen monitors are so nice--bigger, much clearer, and easier to see. Even if I forget my glasses, I am still able to do my work!"

Web Site Update

If you're reading this donor newsletter, then that means you're on our website - which makes us thrilled! With soft colors and an improved navigation system, our appealing site offers immediate resources to help mothers with breastfeeding questions, such as mother-to-mother forums (in English and Spanish), podcasts, and online meetings and chats. Visitors also have the opportunity to find an accredited Leader in their area, shop in the LLLI store, or make an online donation.

Board of Directors

LLLI Founders to Rejoin the Board

The Board of Directors of LLLI and the Founders Advisory Council are pleased to announce that Mary Ann Cahill, Edwina Froehlich, Viola Lennon, Marian Tompson, and Mary White will be rejoining the Board of Directors in March 2008 following the annual meeting of the Board. The Founders attended the November board meeting in Schaumburg, Illinois, USA, where Carol Weisman, President of Board Builders, presented her report on board governance. "The possibilities for a stronger La Leche League sound so exciting and hopeful, we would feel doubly privileged to be part of making at least some of them come true," said Mary Ann Cahill.

Board Development - Progress Report

For the first day and a half of the November Board meeting, the LLLI Board met as planned with Carol Weisman, President of Board Builders and an internationally known speaker, author, trainer, and consultant. The Board also met with Thomas Bakewell, CPA, JD, MBA, MA. Both consultants from Board Builders worked with the Board to incorporate the best nonprofit board practices into the work of the LLLI Board of Directors.

Miscellaneous News

Successful Pilot Project - Spanish Helpline Still Helping Mothers

Through an individual donation, matched by a corporation, a six month pilot project to help Spanish-speaking callers seeking breastfeeding information recently ended. The goal of the Spanish Helpline was to provide a place for Spanish-speaking mothers to receive immediate and personalized help with breastfeeding. During this six months, over 800 mothers from eight states and Puerto Rico reached an LLLI Leader who gave these mothers the help they needed.

Money remaining from this pilot project was re-directed to the United States Helpline, which has now added four Spanish-speaking LLL Leader Breastfeeding Information Specialists to its services. These specialists answer questions in English and Spanish. The 24-hour toll free helpline number is 1-877-4-LALECHE (1-877-452-5324). For more information, please visit the LLL USA website.

The La Leche League U.S. Breastfeeding Helpline has helped close to 8,000 mothers since June of 2007. The actual demand for this service, funded entirely by donations, is double the need currently being met. In order to ensure continuity of this vital mother-to-mother support, please consider making a donation. To make a direct contribution, please send a check to: Carroll Beckham, Helpline Treasurer, 2101 Woods End Drive, Fayetteville, NC 28312. (You can also donate directly on the LLL USA website.) If you have any questions, Carroll can be reached via email at cbeckham@nc.rr.com.

La Leche League is very grateful to you for your generous support. Thanks to you, we can be there for the mothers and babies who need us and assure that La Leche League International will be well-positioned for another 50 years of service to families worldwide.

Best Charities in America Seal for 2007

The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence is awarded to the members of Independent Charities of America and Local Independent Charities of America that have, upon independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness. These standards include those required by the U.S. Government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign, probably the most exclusive fund drive in the world.

Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the United States today, it is estimated that fewer than 50,000, or 5 percent, meet or exceed these standards, and, of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this Seal.

Thank you for all you are doing to support mothers and babies,

The Funding Development Department
Pam Oselka, Major Gifts Officer
Amy Barker, Associate
