Course Descriptions

We offer three
courses, each with a different intended audience:
The
Peer Counselor Course
PURPOSE: This minimum
20 hour course is designed to teach experienced mothers and others from
targeted communities how to help other mothers learn about breastfeeding,
offer breastfeeding support and do breastfeeding promotion. Course topics
include: the benefits of breastfeeding, basic breastfeeding management,
effective techniques for helping mothers, human milk composition, the
anatomy of the lactating breast and the hormones of lactation,barriers
to breastfeeding, how breastfeeding is incorporated into day-to-day
living, and a discussion of support services available to breastfeeding
mothers.
FEE: $350
Fee includes program fee, all hand-outs from curriculum, a copy of
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding,
a copy of The Breastfeeding
Answer Book, a 1 year membership to LLLI and certificate of completion.
The Breastfeeding
Course
Purpose: This minimum
20 hour course is designed to provide a comprehensive basic breastfeeding
course to those who are looking for current accurate breastfeeding information
for themselves or for their staff who are in contact with breastfeeding
women. This course uses the curriculum developed for training Breastfeeding
Peer Counselors and includes the topics listed above under Peer Counselor.
FEE: $350
Fee includes program fee, handouts, syllabus, a copy of THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, a copy of THE BREASTFEEDING ANSWER BOOK, and a certificate of attendance that
can be used to apply for 20 hours of continuing education.
The
Peer Counselor Program Administrator Course
PURPOSE: A minimum
30 hour Course designed to train those who demonstrate a commitment
and desire to assist mothers in breastfeeding resource deprived communities
and have one year of experience counseling breastfeeding mothers and
/or experienced in protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding
and/or counseling breastfeeding mothers to administer a Peer Counselor
Program. The program includes assessing & adapting to local needs,
options and flexibility in instituting the program, the recruitment,
training of and ongoing support of women to become Peer Counselors,
budget and funding, cultural awareness and cross-cultural counseling,
and effective communication tools to enhance participation & learning.
FEE:
$550 ($495 for LLL Leaders). Fee includes program fee, all hand-outs
from curriculum, the LLLI Peer Counselor Curriculum (2005), THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, THE BREASTFEEDING ANSWER BOOK, Syllabus, and is registered for
25 CERPs from IBCLE.
