Alumnae Sessions—Not Just
for Experienced Leaders
Mary Hurt
LLLI Public Relations Associate
From: LEAVEN, Vol. 39 No. 2, April-May 2003, pp. 33-34.
Whether you are a new Leader
or an experienced Leader, the Alumnae Room at the LLLI Conference is
a place where you can go to nurture yourself as well as others. It is
a place to tone your body, soothe your soul, get a massage, participate
in a "tai chi" class, learn about "feng shui," or
simply engage in rich conversations with attendees from around the world.
The specially designed sessions in the Alumnae Room include "Creativity
and Aging: Trusting our Transitions," a special workshop using
journaling, collage, and discussion to explore shifts in female life
cycles that affect body, mind, and spirit. Workshop facilitator, Helen
Redman, is an internationally exhibited artist, teacher, and grandmother,
who will also present a Conference session.
There will also be a scrapbooking
party, where you can bring your photos and "crop till you drop."
The PIZZAZZ team will set up a quilt resource center so that Conference
attendees can create a quilt square, which will be part of a special
gift to the Founders. Another ongoing project in the Alumnae Room will
be a discussion board with thought-provoking questions to encourage
attendees to give their input and share with others. Many more activities,
such as yoga and a salon, are in the planning stages.
The Alumnae Association will
continue to sponsor the popular early morning walks and pool aerobics.
Conference attendees will be able to take a fascinating trek on some
of San Francisco’s famous stairway walks, led by Adah Bakalinsky,
author of Stairway Walks in San Francisco. Each walk will include notes
on historical background, architecture, and other points of interest.
Have you been a Leader for
five years or more? Be sure to stop by the Alumnae room to get your
Leader recognition pin. Have you been a Leader for 25 years or more?
You will be specially recognized at the wonderful Afternoon Tea, which
will include a light meal and a presentation by all seven Founders of
La Leche League. "Thanks for the Memories" is this year’s
theme for the Afternoon Tea. The Founders will share memories of an
individual who was special to them. Professional vocalists will entertain
with appropriate musical selections.
The Alumnae Association will
be sponsoring a raffle with proceeds going to La Leche League International.
Donated prizes include a hand crafted quilt, a sterling silver jewelry
set made by Native Americans and purchased at the Alumnae 2002 Grand
Canyon hike, a mother and baby statue, and a lovely, soothing indoor
fountain.
The Alumnae Association will
also sponsor a Conference orientation session for first-time attendees
and for those from outside the host country. That session and the Navigating
Table at Registration are the place to go for information on the Conference,
the hotel, or San Francisco.
"One of the wonderful
things about the Alumnae Association is that it is an opportunity to
take La Leche League attitudes and philosophy and expand them into other
areas of your life," according to Janet Jendron, Alumnae Association
Public Relations Chair. "The same principles of good communication
apply whether you are a young mother dealing with in-law difficulties
or an experienced parent dealing with difficult challenges with real
teens who have real problems."
Be sure to visit the Alumnae
Room to enjoy the hospitality of the LLLI Alumnae Association and get
a taste of the creative ideas, accomplishments, and activities of its
members.
