From: LEAVEN, Vol. 38 No. 6, December 2002 - January 2003, p. 138.
Whether interested
in coming home from sunny San Francisco, California, USA with information
and encouragement about parenting, inspiration for self-development,
practical hints on how to reach diverse populations, or the latest research
about breastfeeding, the 2003 LLLI Conference has something to offer
everyone. Choosing sessions can be challenging because there are so
many topics and so many dynamic speakers.
Some sessions
are specialized for Leaders while others offer mothers information and
support to breastfeed their babies. "Beyond Diversity 401"
will be of interest for those who want to explore cultural issues and
differences. Nancy March, La Leche League Leader and Peer Counselor
Program Training Administrator, will share her considerable experience
during this session and describe effective ways to reach women from
diverse populations. Ms. March will also explore why simply putting
a meeting notice in the paper is unlikely to bring these diverse mothers
to Group meetings.
Elisabet Helsing,
BSc, MSc, Dr. Med. Sci., Senior Adviser, International Public Health,
Norwegian Board of Health, will inspire everyone at the Opening Session
in her talk, "Breastfeeding: A Baby’s Right." Dr. Helsing
is the author and co-author of books in Norwegian and English, including
European Food and Nutrition Policies in Action and Breastfeeding—How
to Support Success. Dr. Helsing will also be the European representative
at the panel session, "A Tapestry of Breastfeeding and Parenting
Around the World." She will share the stage with representatives
from North America, Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
In addition
to sessions about breastfeeding such as "The Vegetarian Breastfeeding
Mother and Baby," there are sessions designed to help balance life
and make better use of time. Nanci Slagle, co-author of The Freezer
Cooking Manual from 30 Day Gourmet (A Month of Meals Made Easy), will
present a workshop designed to revolutionize your cooking life, lower
your dinner time stress, and help you save time and money. Ms. Slagle
will combine laughter and practical teaching as she guides in developing
a plan to cook and freeze 30 days worth of meals at a time. Whether
you just want hints on how to best freeze foods or how to cook more
than 30 meals at a time, you are sure to enjoy this session, which will
provide enlightening tips that maximize family time.
Jennifer Louden
is the author of several books including The Women’s Comfort Book
and The Woman’s Retreat Book. She will coach mothers of small children
in her sessions, "Mini-Retreats for Mothers of Small Children"
and "Life Coaching for the Next Phase of Life."
Mimi Doe, MEd, award-winning author, will help you get a grip on your
family life, prioritize, and take action for a calmer more efficient
way of living. In her session, "Busy but Balanced," she will
address scheduling life versus living it and will help parents learn
to appreciate every moment and improve the connection to their children,
no matter what their age.
Will Glennon,
founder of the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation™ and author of
200 Ways to Raise a Boy’s Emotional Intelligence and 200 Ways to
Raise a Girl’s Self-Esteem, will speak about the topic of "Boys
and Girls: Raising Boys Who are Emotionally Aware and Girls with a Positive
Self-Image." Glennon, who is also the author of The Collected Wisdom
of Fathers, will also inspire and motivate at his session "Fathering
from the Heart: Strengthening Connections with Your Children."
