Have Mother, Will Travel

Whether you are traveling
to the store to pick up groceries, across town to a Series Meeting,
to a different state to visit family, or across the country to attend
a La Leche League International Conference, the phrase "Have mother…will
travel" is a comfort to any nursling.
For me, as a La Leche League
Leader, "Have mother…will travel" has a completely different
meaning. To me, it means a special opportunity to spend time with my
mother. This is exactly what my mother and I did in July 2003 when we
traveled together to San Francisco, California, USA for the LLLI Conference.
Preparation was the key to
our exciting adventures in San Francisco. We spent time in advance planning
our trip, raising funds by having a garage sale (which covered my Conference
fee of almost $500), and, of course, figuring out what places we wanted
to see. We had a great time at the Conference. I was able to attend
sessions that benefited me as a Leader and as a mother of a preschooler
and kindergartener. My mother was able to attend sessions that benefited
her as a grandmother, as a woman approaching retirement, and as a professional
woman who wanted to learn how her company could make her workplace more
breastfeeding friendly. It was a treat to give my mother a taste, albeit
on a grander scale, of what La Leche League is all about. It was truly
mother-daughter bonding at its best.
I hope you will give thought
to the phrase, "Have mother…will travel" when you begin
to dream about the possibility of traveling to Washington DC, USA next
summer for 19th LLLI Conference. Look for my mother and me—we’re
already making plans to be there!
