La Leche League in Taiwan

Jessica Liao
Taiwan Republic of China
From: LEAVEN, Vol. 38 No. 2, April-May 2002, p. 38.

I am a La Leche League Leader in Taiwan. It is worthy work to help mothers breastfeed, especially because we have so many children at risk of developing allergies in Taiwan. For the past 20 years, the rate of asthma has increased one percent every year. In 2001, our government spent $44,117,650 US (NTD $1,500,000,000) to treat children with asthma. About 27 percent of children with asthma cannot go to school all the time because they are too sick. When children suffer from asthma, the pain they are in breaks their parents’ hearts.

My sister’s husband has serious allergies. Their baby had asthma, too, but I helped my sister breastfeed him. The boy is five years old now; he has asthma, but his condition can be controlled almost without medicine because of being nursed nearly two years. If she did not nurse, what do you suppose would have happened?

There are some mothers like my sister who are being helped by LLL Leaders. What about the many mothers in Taiwan who are not able to breastfeed because LLL is not there to help?

So far, we only have eight Leaders in Taiwan since 1986. We need La Leche League International to accredit more breastfeeding mothers as LLL Leaders. It costs a lot of money to send the Leader Accreditation Department and Leader Department resource people to help us. We hope to have more Leaders soon so more mothers and babies can be helped.
