World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is an annual celebration of the 1990 signing in Florence, Italy, of the Innocenti Declaration on the Protection, Promotion and Support of Breastfeeding.

Every year, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), which is based in Malaysia, chooses the theme for WBW. The week is celebrated in more than 120 countries. Some countries celebrate in October, and the USA organizes fundraising and awareness events from May through September. Officially, World Breastfeeding Week is August 1-7.

The theme for 2006 is Code Watch: 25 Years of Protecting Breastfeeding -- highlighting the quarter-century history of the World Health Organization's International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, commonly called "The WHO Code."

The WHO Code is intended for all nations; however, all nations do not comply with it, even those who have signed on to support it.

The importance of breastfeeding cannot be discounted as the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 1.5 million infant deaths could be avoided annually if all babies were breastfed. Aggressive marketing of human milk substitutes contributes to lower breastfeeding initiation rates and duration rates. As breastfeeding advocates work to make Code compliance mandatory worldwide, it is important to remember that local education about the Code is equally valuable.

This year's WBW theme, Code Watch: 25 Years of Protecting Breastfeeding, along with the 50th anniversary of La Leche League International, provide a wonderful opportunity to create both media interest and interagency cooperation. Every year more hospitals, clinics, community health services, WIC offices (Women, Infants, and Children -- a US food supplement program), and lactation departments celebrate World Breastfeeding Week.

Groups that have World Breastfeeding Week celebrations in 2006 may wish to highlight both the 25th anniversary of the Innocenti Declaration and the 50th anniversary of LLLI.

This year's WBW theme lends itself to educational efforts and can quite easily be done from the comfort of your home at a time that is convenient to you. Use the 2006 WBW theme in ways that work for your community. It's time to celebrate breastfeeding, LLLI, and the WHO Code.

For information about The Innocenti Declaration see enwork/inno.htm. For information about The WHO Code see Appendix 33 in the LLLI Policies and Standing Rules found at
