Fundraising Ideas

From: LEAVEN, Vol. 33 No. 4, August-September 1997, p. 92

  • Hold a reunion for alumnae Leaders. Charge a small fee for attending. Auction off tickets to a theatre performance, night at a hotel or meal at a restaurant donated by a local business or person who wants to support LLL. Keep some of the profit for your Group or Area and send a portion to LLL. Be sure to check state and local regulations that pertain to auctions, raffles, etc. These and other kinds of fundraisers often require special permits or permissions.
  • Donate money from personal or Group resources in honor of a retiring Leader or a significant Group or Area event.
  • Approach local businesses for funds to build a Group Library or send Leaders to an Area or International Conference. This frees up money in Group Treasuries to give to LLLI. It also supports LLLI indirectly through registrations and book sales. Large corporations may have a formal giving program. Call and get the director's name and written guidelines for charitable giving (see sample letter of inquiry). Carefully follow the instructions for creating a proposal and submit your request by the deadline.

Sample Letter of Inquiry (use letterhead stationery)

Your name, title Group / Area Address Phone Date

Contact person, title Business / Foundation Address

Dear (contact person),

La Leche League of (Group/Area) wishes to request funding from (foundation/business) for (amount of money). La Leche League of (Group/Area) is affiliated with La Leche League International, the world-recognized authority on breastfeeding for 40 years. La Leche League of (Group/Area) has been active in (location) for (number) years.

La Leche League's mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother. All our Leaders are volunteers so financial support of La Leche League goes directly toward operating costs and the services we provide to the community. Your donation is tax-deductible.

(In one paragraph, describe your project. They will ask for more information if it is needed. State how the donation will benefit the Group or community. For example: "St. Croix Valley La Leche League hopes to increase the incidence and duration of breastfeeding by making accurate and up-to-date information available to mothers in our community. It is our goal to provide 100 copies of BREASTFEEDING PURE & SIMPLE to Lakeview Hospital to give to new mothers. We have contacted the hospital with our idea and they are very excited about it. The total cost for the books including shipping charges is $700.")

There is no other organization in our community doing the same kind of free, mother-to-mother breastfeeding support work that La Leche League has done for 40 years. Certainly a grant from (business/foundation) would recognize La Leche League's work and acknowledge that the health benefits of breastfeeding should extend to (targeted community/beneficiary).

I will call you next week and thank you in advance for your consideration of our funding request.

Sincerely, Lisa Leader
