Short Stories from Around the World: Tipat Chalav

Ellen Longman

From: LEAVEN, Vol. 36 No. 6, December 2000-January 2001, p. 116

"Tipat Chalav" is Hebrew for a "drop of milk." This is the nickname for the official mother and baby clinics, which are in charge of the care of healthy pregnant mothers and babies up to five years of age.

I work in the "Tipat Chalav" in the Sharon area of Israel as a registered nurse. My contact is through a mixture of being a nurse and an LLL Leader - I am introduced as both.

I have met the new head of Tipat Chalav nurses, Patricia Zimmerman, and she is really pro-breastfeeding and is interested in progressing toward the goal of a baby friendly community. She has invited me to give a talk to the nurses, wants me to help her organize preparing for breastfeeding classes for first time breastfeeding mothers, and wants to get rid of the free formula packets given out at the Tipat Chalav. It's like a dream come true!
