From: LEAVEN, Vol. 42 No. 3, July-August-September 2006, p. 69

Plan now to attend the LLLI 50th Anniversary Conference, Celebrating the Power of Breastfeeding, on July 20-23, 2007 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The Conference is the culmination of a year's worth of activities celebrating the founding of La Leche League International in October 1956.

Amazing speakers, impressive information, and outstanding subject matter will be the hallmark of this distinctive celebration. Join us as we pay tribute to the Founders of LLLI and celebrate breastfeeding and the founding of an organization that began as a neighborhood resource and grew to have a presence in countries around the world.

You will have the opportunity to choose from almost 100 unique sessions on breastfeeding, parenting, and personal development. All of these presentations will help you to help the mothers in your group. They will provide you with the information and inspiration as you carry on your valuable work as a parent and as a Leader.

Ina May Gaskin, MA, CPM, often dubbed the mother of midwifery, will present her perspective on natural childbirth at the Conference. She is well known for her seminal work, Spiritual Midwifery, which is now in its fourth edition. Her more recent book, Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, inspires women to gain confidence in their bodies and assures them that their bodies still work. Ina May, who has attended more than 1200 births, developed the "Gaskin Maneuver," which uses simple body movements to facilitate a difficult birth. This obstetrical maneuver is the first to be named after a midwife. She is sure to delight Conference attendees with her touch of wry humor and her intelligent command of birth research and statistics.

Peggy O'Mara is another dynamic speaker who will share her wit and wisdom with Conference participants. Internationally known for her philosophical inspiration and practical advice, she is the mother of four grown children and editor and owner of Mothering Magazine.

Peggy is the author of Having a Baby Naturally: The Mothering Magazine Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth and Natural Family Living: The Mothering Magazine Guide to Parenting. Her latest book, A Quiet Place: Essays on Life and Family, features 36 of her award-winning editorials.

Ruth Lawrence, MD, FAAP, a member of the Health Advisory Council of the LLLI Professional Advisory Board, will share her experience as a well-known professor, author, and breastfeeding expert with Conference attendees. Her book, Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession, is now in its fifth edition. Dr. Lawrence first became interested in breastfeeding while she was doing her residency at Yale New Haven Hospital.

She began the Breastfeeding and Human Lactation Study Center at the University of Rochester. This center maintains a database of breastfeeding information for medical professionals. Dr. Lawrence also helped to start the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. She believes that it is important to let pregnant mothers know that women need to have information in order to breastfeed. She tells mothers to contact La Leche League for the information and support they need to breastfeed their babies.

Join other Leaders, parents, and breastfeeding experts from around the world at the LLLI 50th Anniversary Conference as we learn, share, and make a difference.
