La Leche League International is preparing for the upcoming Conference in July 2005.
Speakers have been confirmed and informational sessions will be available to you to learn and grow. From the impressive opening night until the heartwarming closing and dinner, The 19th LLL International Breastfeeding Conference will feature stellar speakers who inform, inspire, and motivate. Internationally recognized speaker and best-selling author, Barbara Coloroso, will open the presentations in her session titled "Ethics and Children." In an evening packed with solid, practical advice for parents of children of all ages, she will show you how to use the day-to-day experience of family life to build an ethical foundation in your children.
“It is critical that we teach this next generation how to think—not just what to think,” states Ms. Coloroso, who has been a consultant in the USA, Canada, Europe, Central and South America, Asia, New Zealand, Australia, and Iceland. Speaking with clarity, insight, and honesty, Coloroso will leave you knowing how to encourage moral courage in your children, how to teach them to know what is right, how to act on this knowledge, and how to be willing to speak about it.
The following morning, participants have the opportunity to gather together in one large ballroom to enjoy a stimulating, motivational presentation. Ros Escott, BAppSc, IBCLC will tell us how “Head to Toe: Breastfeeding Does Make a Difference.” Ms. Escott is Regional Administrator of the Australian Office for the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, which serves the South Pacific, Asia Pacific, southern Africa, Ireland, and Great Britain. She will present compelling evidence about the benefits of breastfeeding and its lifelong impact on you and your child.
Later in the week, Gordon Neufeld, PhD, will present the big picture of parenting in “Hold onto Your Kids: Why Parents Matter.” Dr. Neufeld, a developmental psychologist, author, father of five, and grandfather to three, has a speaking style that is lively and informative, an approach that is refreshing, and an effect that affirms intuition. His focus is on attachments and those who are responsible for them. He believes that parents need to take an approach to parenting that reflects the child’s need to stay attached until they are ready to venture forth on their own.
Included in Conference registration are three luncheons, which each highlight dynamic speakers. Award winning teacher and researcher, E. Stephen Buescher, MD, will explain why human milk is more than just nutritious food for babies. In an extensive examination of human milk, Dr. Buescher has explored the anti-inflammatory characteristics of human milk and its effect on disease prevention.
During another luncheon, be prepared to discover how to “Master the Art of Doing It Now,” where you will learn how to overcome the damaging habit of procrastination. Rita Emmett, a published author, speaker, trainer, professional educator, and self-described recovering procrastinator, will use the principles of accelerated learning to help you absorb more ideas and retain them longer. Ms. Emmett’s goals are to give you some basic ideas that you can use right away and to prove to you that learning can be fun.
At the final luncheon, physician Audrey Naylor will take a global look at the health benefits of human milk. Dr. Naylor, MD, DrPH, was the President, Chief Executive Officer, and Co-founder (1985-2002) of Wellstart International (an independent nonprofit agency). She will use her experience in clinical and technical consultation to provide cutting-edge evidence about what modern science has taught us about the ancient art of breastfeeding.
Frequent contributor to NEW BEGINNINGS, television host of Discovery Health Channel’s show, “Make Room for Baby,” and author Lu Hanessian will be the speaker at the closing dinner festivities. Author of the recently reviewed book, Let the Baby Drive: Navigating the Road of New Motherhood, Hanessian will humorously and sensitively explain how she learned the art of mothering by watching her own child. She will share her personal journey of motherhood to help reaffirm the need of listening to children so that they will listen as they grow.
