La Leche League in the USA Supports Hurricane Devastated Areas

Nancy White
Jackson MS USA
From NEW BEGINNINGS, Vol. 23 No 4, July-August 2006, p. 178

The year 2005 will be remembered for many things. For residents of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, USA, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita forever changed lives drastically and dramatically. As with any tragedy, we see both the good and bad of humankind. The overwhelming generosity of the breastfeeding community brings me to tears. Hundreds of boxes per week were sent to the La Leche League safe house set up in Jackson, Mississippi. Donations poured in from all over the United States and the world.

The 2005 World Breastfeeding Week Celebration USA Divisions Joint Projects money was also set aside to help Leaders and mothers in the hurricane-affected areas. Two projects received funding; LLL Metro Jackson, Mississippi will be purchasing nursing bras and supplies for breastfeeding Leaders and mothers in affected communities, and LLL Alabama/Mississippi/Louisiana will be holding a series of Leader Applicant workshops to help accredit Leaders. Many Leaders left the New Orleans and Mississippi coastal communities following the hurricanes and have relocated to other states.

Almost a year after the hurricanes, many families are still trying to piece their lives back together. We send a sincere thank you to all of you who sent donations and for your continued love and support. Thank you for supporting your local 2005 World Breastfeeding Week Celebration. You can feel a special warmth knowing a part of each of your donations made its way to helping hurricane-affected families.
