Fundraising Success for LLL in the USA

By Linda Parry and Pam Dunne
From: NEW BEGINNINGS, Vol. 22 No. 2, March-April 2005, pp. 82-83

In 2004, over 400 La Leche League Groups in the USA held fundraising events between May and September to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) and support the ongoing work of our organization. This fundraiser, formerly known as World Walk for Breastfeeding, began in 1991. This year, many Groups raised money by holding fairs, walking, auctions, drawings, luncheons, and other events. Leaders and members raised $144,000 to continue the mission of La Leche League.

Thanks to the generosity of many sponsors, top fundraisers were awarded with prizes. The two Grand Prizes, which were available to individuals who raised the most money, were donated by Mothering Magazine and Arms Reach. Robin Rziha, a Leader in Hoisington, Kansas and Jamie Failla of Annapolis, Maryland received free registration, transportation, and hotel stay for the 19th La Leche League International Breastfeeding Conference in Washington, DC on July 2-5, 2005.

Robin participated in the LLL of Kansas fundraiser called Breastfed Babies: Cruising to a Healthy Life, which was a drawing for a PT Cruiser (see LEAVEN Feb-Mar 2005 for more details). Robin commented, "I have been a Leader for six years and I am very excited to be able to attend my first LLLI Conference with my family. We are looking forward to the Conference and seeing the sights in Washington DC."

Jamie commented that, "Since the Conference is so close, winning the Grand Prize will now ensure that all four Leaders in the LLL of Annapolis Group will be able to attend." She participated in the LLL of Annapolis, Maryland fundraiser, where they printed t-shirts with the LLLUSA WBW logo on the front and sold sponsor space on the back. All who attended their event were given free t-shirts.

Lansinoh Laboratories donated a $500 educational scholarship that was won by First Prize Winner, Shani Richart, an LLL member who attends both LLL of Lake Norman and LLL of Mooresville Toddler meetings in North Carolina. Shani solicited over 60 Silent Auction items by carrying solicitation letters with her at all times and asking everyone she had contact with. Shani credits her involvement in WBW as leading to the realization that, while she came to LLL for fellowship, LLL is crucial in the role of mother-to-mother support of breastfeeding.

Other prizes included CuddlyWrap baby carriers (won by Barb Gabbert-Bacon of Wichita, Kansas; Jane Tuttle, LLLI Board of Directors and Leader in Lawrence, Kansas; and Angela Nooner of Moore, Oklahoma), a Mother of 7 breastfeeding video (won by Sandy Aldrich of Timken, Kansas), children's books, silver, and/or books from the LLLI catalogue. (See page 83 for the list of other prize winners.) Detailed reports are available on the LLLI Web site at

One remarkable legacy of this year's celebrations is the list of fundraising ideas that will remain and be added to for future years. While many Groups continue to hold traditional walks and many individuals still solicit sponsorships for themselves, some have enhanced their events by adding a variety of fundraising activities. Another legacy is the WBW public service radio announcement produced by Steve Lester, a father and supporter of the LLL mission. There is also an announcement available in Spanish, which can be used at any time since it is not centered around WBW. Both versions can be accessed at

So many individuals, groups, and organizations helped with WBW. We would like to acknowledge and thank our prize sponsors (see page 83), Paul Torgus for his graphic skills in creating the LLLUSA WBW logo, Sue Ann Kendall for the awesome Web site, registrar Karen Rialla, treasurer Pam Mills, and the LLLUSA Steering Committee for their inspiration and constant encouragement and support.

Our biggest thank you is reserved for every Leader and Group member who participated in WBW. Because of your hard work, the mission of LLL in the USA is being funded on many levels.
