The Dreamers are the Winners

Jane Tuttle

From: NEW BEGINNINGS, Vol. 23 No. 2, March-April 2006, pp. 84-86

Walt Disney is quoted as saying, "If you can dream it, you can do it." La Leche League International is fortunate to have many dreamers! Women who dream of making the world breastfeeding friendly; women who dream of promoting breastfeeding as a way of mothering; and women who dream of supporting and publicizing LLL and breastfeeding through the World Breastfeeding Week Celebration in the USA.

The 2005 World Breastfeeding Week Celebration in the USA came to an official close on September 30, 2005. With fundraising as their goal and breastfeeding their cause, Leaders, members, friends, and others celebrated with a variety of activities and promotions. Groups held basket drawings, silent auctions, bake sales, letter writing campaigns, and festivals. Today we celebrate the winners of the 2005 WBW Celebration!

One of the keys to being a winner according to Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric, is to have fun at what you are doing. It is easy to see that the Leaders and Groups who are winners in the 2005 WBW Celebration Incentive Prices are fun-loving women. Their activities for the celebration reflect fun.

Jamie Failla, LLL of Annapolis, Maryland, is the Grand Prize winner and will receive a $1,500 educational scholarship to the 2007 LLLI Conference in Chicago, Illinois. The Annapolis Group held a Family Fun Day in June at a local elementary school. They had a raffle for amazing prizes solicited from local businesses. They offered a free t-shirt and/or tote bag to the first 200 participants, and asked for a minimum donation from every family who attended the day's festivities.

Jaime also put the 2005 WBWC Donor Incentive Flyers to good use. The previous forms were targeted to health care professionals. The 2005 forms were more generic. Jamie received donations of $300 to $1,000 from nine local companies as diverse as financial institutions, car dealerships, home maintenance companies, a vacuum cleaner franchise, and a garden shop. Breastfeeding families are sought-after customers.

Brenda Bandy, LLL of Manhattan, Kansas, and Lissa Welles, LLL of Jersey City, New Jersey, are the two First Prize winners and will each receive a $500 educational scholarship to the 2007 LLLI Conference. The Manhattan, Kansas Group held a Walk in a city park. Besides having the one-mile walk with sponsored walkers, the Group sponsored activities for children such as pony rides and a bounce house. The free t-shirts given to walkers had the logos of various business sponsors on the back. The sponsorship money was over half of the total income raised by Brenda.

Lissa Welles and Group members started in January 2005 planning for two family fun festivals in their community. The events were called "Breastfeeding: Making Families Stronger." In Hoboken, the festival was held at a local park that included professional soccer players demonstrating soccer skills, as well as face painting, crafts, and infant massage. There were also discussions about the importance of breastfeeding.

The next month they held another festival at a mall in Jersey City that featured author Lu Hanessian. Face painting and children's crafts were available as well as music for children. Lisa secured business sponsors that included various levels of sponsorship for the festivals. She was also very successful at soliciting advertisements from the local stores where she was known as a customer.

The winning Leaders used a variety of activities to secure funds from personal solicitation to an event with minimum donation. The funds they raised will go toward meeting the LLLI mission of helping mothers and babies.

The Annapolis Group is using their funds in a variety of ways. They are helping Group workers and mothers attend their Area Conference and helping supplement Leader education. Another use cited by both the Annapolis and Manhattan Groups was adding to their Group Library so that mothers could augment what they hear at meetings. The Jersey City Group is using part of their funds for focused outreach to African-American mothers in their community. All the Groups mentioned wanting to provide their local health care providers more information about La Leche League and breastfeeding.

Thank you to the hundreds of Groups, Leaders, and members who participated and spread knowledge about breastfeeding in their communities. The results and reports can be found on the WBWC homepage.

The uses for the funds raised as well as the ways to raise funds are limited only by your dreams. Become a dreamer and participate in the 2006 World Breastfeeding Week Celebration. Information is available at www.lllusa.org/lllusa/wbw.html.
