Our first son, August, was finally conceived after 13 rounds of artificial reproductive therapy. He was premature, born weighing four pounds, 11 ounces. He's now a healthy strong boy and breastfed into toddlerhood.
After August's birth, we attempted to conceive another child to no avail. After two years of trying, we reconciled ourselves to having an only child -- even finding the special benefits of "just one." Then lo and behold, at the age of 41, I discovered I was pregnant! My pregnancy was long and arduous, with a diagnosis of hyperemesis gravidarum -- constant nausea and vomiting while pregnant. Thank goodness I was still nursing my toddler when I became pregnant. While I was too nauseous and dehydrated to play ball or ride bikes, I was still able to nurse my son and maintain that special connection. Tobey Del Neumeyer was born healthy and took to the breast tenaciously. Our naturally conceived "miracle baby" is now three-and-a-half years old, healthy and happy.
We love our boys and believe that their confidence and gentle nature come from the closeness and acceptance we share as a family. After two very different conceptions and two very different pregnancies, thanks to the support I found within La Leche League, there was only one mothering choice for me: breastfeeding!
