A Day at the Farm

Stacy Ramirez

From NEW BEGINNINGS, Vol. 24 No. 5, September-October 2007, p. 234

Celebrated in over 120 countries, World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is the greatest outreach vehicle for the breastfeeding movement. It is officially celebrated every year in the first week of August. In honor of WBW, many LLL Groups across the world hold a celebratory event to promote breastfeeding and LLL in their community.

In the USA, LLL Groups participate in the World Breastfeeding Week Celebration between May 1st and September 30th. Groups generally combine fun activities with fundraising to raise money for their local Group and the organization as a whole.

Although planning and celebrating WBW in 2007 has passed, it's never too late to get involved with a local Group for next year's event. To find a Group near you, go to Here's what one USA Group did to celebrate WBW in their area.

La Leche League of Huntsville and Madison County, Alabama, USA held its third annual "Day at the Farm," at the residence of one of our Leaders. Jennie's Farm is a fabulous place for a family day! Retired Leaders, active Leaders, Leader Applicants, current and former LLL members, and children gathered for swimming, games, horse petting, dinner, and door prizes. The wrap around porch was perfect for dinner and visiting with friends. We sent invitations and asked for donations to attend. The food was home cooked and provided by several Leaders.

We netted $286, which we will put to use in our community throughout the year. One way we do this is by attending several baby fairs throughout the year. We pass out tear-off sheets, NEW BEGINNINGS, meeting information, and give away one copy of THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING at each event. We feel successful in our WBWC 2007 and look forward to our fourth annual "Day at the Farm" in 2008. If you are in the area of Huntsville, Alabama next summer, stop on by!
