World Walk Letters

Robin Rziha, LLL Leader of Great Bend Kansas, shares the two letters she sent to family, friends, and mothers to promote her Group's Walk. Every Leader has touched the lives of many people; many of those individuals would be happy to donate to La Leche League--if they are asked! Who have you helped? Have you asked them to help La Leche League? These letters were originally developed by Jane Tuttle, of Lawrence Kansas.

Sample Letter 1

Dear Mother,

La Leche League needs your support! If you've been touched by La Leche League, or if you or someone you love has received information and/or help from an accredited La Leche League Leader, here is your chance to help La Leche League continue to be around for our children and grandchildren.

La Leche League's purpose is to help breastfeeding mothers and babies, not raise money, but it does take money to accomplish this goal. It takes money to provide a mother with information sheets relevant to a particular problem she may be experiencing. It takes money to keep our Group Library updated with books. It also takes money to print meeting notices each year (over 2,000) and distribute them around the area to let women know that we are here to help.

You might be interested to learn that (Insert Statistical Information Here, i.e., number of mothers your Group has helped during meetings, how many phone calls are taken each month.)

As an LLL Leader, I am a trained volunteer and pay membership dues to LLL as any other member. I talk to mothers on the phone who have concerns about breastfeeding. I lead monthly meetings where I give mother-to-mother support for breastfeeding. I attend other meetings on LLL's behalf. I go to Continuing Education classes about breastfeeding. I am active in the state LLL organization. I personally donate money to LLL.

The Walk is a fundraiser which benefits LLL at all levels, with most of the money staying with our local Group. It is more symbolic than lengthy. Our Walk will be our participation in (Describe Your Group's Walk Activities Here).

We have participated in other fundraisers in the past and I will tell you that it can be difficult. Each of our members (including myself) has young children and many of the mothers work outside the home. There is not always a lot of spare time, as you can imagine.

I do hope you will consider making a tax-deductible donation to La Leche League.

I thank you for whatever donation you can send. A donation for as little as five dollars would really make a difference.

I've enclosed an envelope, stamped and addressed for your convenience. Please make your check payable to LLL of (Insert Group Name Here). I'll send you a receipt.

Thank you very much for your support of our fundraiser to benefit mothers and babies in our community, Kansas, and throughout the world.

On Behalf of La Leche League of (Your Group Name Here),

Sample Letter 2

Dear Friends,

La Leche League is where I put most of my volunteer time and energy. Some of you may have personally benefited from LLL. Others just know La Leche League as unfamiliar words; that it has something to do with breastfeeding. Let me share a bit about La Leche League and why I think it is an amazing grassroots organization.

According to Ross Mothers Survey, the rate of breastfeeding in 1956 at one week was 28.7 percent. In 2001, the initiation rate in hospital was 69.5 percent. The duration has generally been increasing ever since the 70s with one dip during an eight-year period in the 80s. Since 1991, the duration has been increasing every year up to the latest statistic for 2001, which is 32.5 percent.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends mothers breastfeed for at least the first 12 months of life and as long after as mutually desired. Breastfeeding is one of the most important things a mother can do for her baby. The research is quite clear on that.

Breastfeeding is natural, yet it goes easier when a mother has support and good information. That is what I do. I talk to mothers on the phone who have concerns about breastfeeding. I lead monthly meetings where I give mother-to-mother support for breastfeeding. I attend other meetings on LLL's behalf. I go to Continuing Education classes so I am knowledgeable about breastfeeding. I am active in the state LLL organization. I personally donate money to LLL.

Today I am asking you to make a tax-deductible donation to La Leche League. Our local Group is participating in the World Walk for Breastfeeding. This is a fundraiser that benefits LLL at all levels, with most of the money staying with out local Group. For our Walk, we will (Describe Walk plans here).

I thank you for whatever donation you can send. I've enclosed an envelope, stamped and addressed, for your convenience. Please make your check payable (Your Group Name Here). I'll send you a receipt. Donations are tax deductible and help LLL at every level with most of the money staying in the (Your Group Name Here) Group.

Thank you for your consideration: you know how hard it is for me to ask for money. I also thank you for your support of me in doing what I really love doing: helping mothers learn to mother through breastfeeding.

Sincerely,
Lisa Leader
